What is Coaching Hub?
Two tools for coaching junior basketball. Sub Sheet works out who plays when so every child gets a fair go. Drill Lab lets you plan a training session from animated drills.
Both work on your phone and are free to use.
Do I need an account?
No. Everything works without signing in, and it stays on the device you are using.
If you do create an account, we email you a link to confirm it. Tap the link and you are signed in.
Sign in only if you want to keep your team online, use it on more than one device, or share it with another coach.
Game day in four steps
- Roster: type your players' first names. Switch off anyone who is absent today.
- Rules: in Game setup, set how many players are on court and how long each period is.
- Tap Build the plan.
- Plan: check the grid, then open the Cheat sheet for the kids. On the Game tab, start the clock and it shows when each sub is due.
Can I put it on my phone's home screen?
iPhone: open the site in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.
Android: open the site in Chrome, tap the menu (three dots), then Add to Home screen or Install app.
Sub Sheet also works with no signal once you have opened it once.
Sub Sheet
How do I set up a game?
Open the Rules tab and look at Game setup. Set the number of players on court, the number of periods (halves or quarters), the minutes in each period, and how many intervals per period.
Change these before you tap Build the plan.
What does "intervals per period" mean?
It is how many equal chunks each half or quarter is split into. A sub can happen at the end of each chunk.
More intervals means more changes and shorter stints on court or bench. With 1 interval there are no subs in the middle of a period.
What are tiers?
A tier is a group you choose, for example Tier 1 for your most experienced players. A rule can then say "at least 2 Tier 1 players on court" so the strongest group is never all on the bench or all on court.
If you do not need that, leave everyone on No tier.
What do Must, Try and Excuse mean?
Must means the plan builder never breaks the rule.
Try means it aims for the rule but gives way if two rules clash.
Excuse lets one player sit out when a particular teammate is on court. It is always a Try rule.
Rules higher in the list win ties.
The plan is not what I wanted. How do I change it?
On the Plan tab, tap any square to put that player on or off the court for that interval.
Or tap Rebuild to try again. Each build is a fresh attempt, so you may get a different mix that still follows your rules.
How do I print the kids' cheat sheet?
On the Plan tab, open the Cheat sheet, then tap Print. Each half gets its own landscape A4 page, with a lane for every child showing when they are on and off.
No printer? Take a screenshot and send it to parents.
How does the game clock work?
Open the Game tab and start the clock. It shows the time left and when the next sub is due. If you leave the page, the clock keeps counting.
Reset game clock puts it back to the start. If you tapped it by mistake, tap Undo in the bubble that appears.
What is "Team focus today"?
On the Game tab you can pick coaching points for the day, such as a defence or passing principle. Each one comes with why it matters and how to coach it.
I removed a player by mistake
Tap Undo in the bubble that appears at the bottom for about 8 seconds. The player comes back along with any rules about them.
After that, add them again and set up their rules again.
How do I back up my team?
At the bottom of the Roster tab, tap Copy backup or Share / save file. To restore, paste the backup into the box underneath.
A backup contains your players' names, so keep it somewhere private.
Drill Lab
How do I plan a session?
- Tap a drill card to add it to your plan. Tap it again to remove it.
- Use the + and − buttons to change the minutes for each drill. The bar shows how much of your 45 minutes is used.
- Use the arrows to put the drills in order.
How do I see how a drill works?
Tap View drill under a card. You get an animated court showing where each player moves, with play, pause and speed controls, and step by step coaching notes underneath.
How do I find a drill?
Use the Search drills box, or tap a skill such as Passing or Defence to filter. Starred shows only the drills you have starred.
Can I make my own drill?
Yes. Tap + New drill and build it step by step in the drill creator, then add your coaching notes.
You can also tap Copy on a built-in drill and change it to suit your team. Your drills show under Mine.
What are the "Coach's tips" boxes?
Short reminders on how to balance a session and keep every child moving. They start closed. Open one and it stays open next time.
Teams and sharing
What does signing in give me?
- Your team is saved online, not just on one phone.
- You can use it on a second device.
- You can share it with an assistant coach or manager.
- You can suggest ideas and vote on the Ideas page.
How do I invite another coach?
Sign in, open Account, and under Invite another coach choose Editor link or View-only link. Send them the link. It works for 14 days.
Anyone with the link can join, so only share it with people you trust.
What is the difference between Editor and View only?
Editors can change the roster, rules, plan and drills. Viewers can look at everything and use the game clock, but not change anything. Viewers suit parents or helpers who just need to see the plan.
Can I coach more than one team?
Yes, up to 10. Each team has its own players, rules and plan. Switch teams from the bar at the top of any page, or add a new one with + New team. You can copy the game setup from an existing team. Players are never copied.
Who can see my data?
Only the people on your team, through invite links. Nothing is public.
Use first names only and keep other personal details out. You can delete everything you saved online from the Account page. Data on your own device is not touched.
I forgot my password
On the Account page, tap Forgot your password?, enter your email and we will send you a link to choose a new one. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive.
Fixing things
I do not see the latest changes
To load fast, the apps show the last copy they saved and fetch the new one in the background. When a new version is ready you will see a New version ready · Refresh bar. Tap Refresh.
You can also check by hand: tap the circular arrow in the top bar. It says "You have the latest version", or shows the Refresh bar if there is something new.
No bar? Close the app and open it again.
Does it work with no signal?
Sub Sheet does once you have opened it with signal at least once. Drill Lab and the other pages need a connection the first time, and may look plainer without one.
Dark or light mode
Tap the sun or moon button in the top bar to switch. To follow your phone's setting again, open Account and choose Auto under Appearance.
The plan will not build
Some rules may not all be possible together, for example needing 3 Tier 1 players on court when only 2 are available. Change a Must rule to Try, remove a rule, or check who is switched on in the Roster, then build again.
I changed phones and my team is gone
Data lives on the device unless you signed in. If you were signed in, sign in on the new phone and choose the online copy when asked.
If you were not, you will need a backup. See How do I back up my team? under Sub Sheet. Do that before you change phones.
I have an idea or found a problem
Go to Ideas and requests to suggest a rule or drill, or vote on what other coaches have asked for.
Nothing matches that. Try a shorter word, or ask on the Ideas page.
