Coach's tipPlan your session in thirds

A balanced session gives equal time to three kinds of work. In a 45 minute session, that is about 15 minutes each.

  1. Skill development Drills

Isolate one skill and repeat it with focus, such as passing, footwork or finishing. This is where new habits begin.

  2. Small-sided games 1v1, 2v2, 3v3

Pick the game that targets the skill you just practised. Fewer players means more touches and more decisions for every child.

  3. Conditioned games Play with a rule

Change the rules to pull out the behaviour you want. For example: five passes before a team can score, or no dribbling.

Mix it up. The thirds do not have to run in order. Try drill, game, drill, game: after each drill, play a short game that rewards the skill, so the kids use it straight away.

The drills below cover the first third. Each drill page also lists ways to make it harder, and those make good game ideas for the other two.

Coach's tipsKeep every child moving
  1. Set up before you start

Have the kids standing in position before you explain or begin the drill. Less waiting means more time on the ball.

  2. Keep everyone playing

Avoid drills where players sit out or get knocked out. Use points instead, so every child stays involved and still has something to chase.

  3. Short lines

No more than four kids in a line, and ideally three waiting for the drill to begin. If a line grows, split the group in two.
